Community isn’t built overnight — it’s woven through moments of competition, conversation, and creativity. This past Thursday and Friday, the North Fork Cup reminded us of just that.
Southold and Greenport each fielded eight players in a spirited two-day match. After Day One, Southold led 9–3, but Greenport mounted a comeback. In the end, Southold edged out Greenport 12–10 to win the Cup.
Yet the real story wasn’t the scoreboard. It was the friendships formed and the conversations shared between people who might never have crossed paths. Personally, I had the chance to speak with someone who had held very different opinions of me based on my letters to the editor of a local paper. By the end, we parted ways with a firm handshake and a deeper understanding of each other. That was a true win.

The Cup trophy itself carries this same spirit. Created by Cindy Pease Roe, a Greenport artist who transforms reclaimed and recycled materials into meaningful works, the piece is crafted from golf balls and reclaimed wood from a local dock builders scrap pile. Cindy’s work blends sustainability and artistry — a reminder that creativity and community can go hand in hand.
We also owe thanks to Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, whose vision launched this event. Their commitment to bringing people together through beer, art, and community made the North Fork Cup possible and will continue to fuel its growth.
This Cup was more than golf. It was about camaraderie, creativity, and community — about removing labels, bridging divides, and celebrating what makes the North Fork so unique.
